Pick a character and I will give and explain the top five ideas/concepts/etc I keep in mind while writing that character that I believe are essential to accurately depicting them. Any and all characters welcome ( including ones I haven't written but might know about...)

Date: 2012-07-19 02:47 pm (UTC)1.) Hermione is extremely good at memorizing details and facts, but not very good at freelancing or doing variations on them. In HBP, for example, she refuses to deviate from her book's instructions, even when it becomes obvious that Harry's alternate instructions yield better results. This is even before it becomes a case of her being jealous/unhappy with Harry's success. Inversely though, Hermione's near-encyclopedic knowledge of many different topics means that she usually knows something about what's going on. For example, in DH, Hermione's knowledge of wizarding wills is enough to reveal that there had been more going on with Dumbledore's will than the Minister of Magic was letting on.
2.) She is not so logical when it comes to issues that are directly concerning her. For example, she is able to tell Harry exactly what the issues with Cho are and how he should have handled the situations, but then handles her attraction to Ron less than gracefully.
3.) At the beginning of the series, Hermione was not very good at planning on the fly. Even if she could solve a problem, having it sprung on her suddenly would cause her to panic and forget what to do. For example, in SS, she is taken by surprise and doesn't know how to fight the cave troll, and forgets how to magically summon fire to ward off the Devil's Snare. By the end of the series, Hermione has managed to overcome this issue. Defining moment, I'd say, is when the trio escape Lovegood's house. The Death Eaters are closing in and they have to get out immediately, but Hermione quickly comes up with a plan that lets them escape, while confirming Lovegood's story that Harry was there (thus lowering the chances of him being attacked by the DEs) and hiding that she and Ron were there as well. There's also their kidnapping by the Snatchers, when Hermione thinks quickly and is able to hide her handbag in her sock, disguises Harry's face, and (while being tortured) comes up with a lie about where Gryffindor's sword came from.
4.) Maybe a bit moreso towards the start of the series, but Hermione is a bit insecure, which is part of the reason that she is so overzealous in her studies. She also is extremely gratified when her friends are appreciative of her knowledge. (For example, her reaction to being told that a spell she cast was NEWTS level and that someone found it very impressive)
5.) Hermione is not afraid to take action against people that anger her. She slaps Malfoy for insulting Hagrid, goes on her crusade against Rita Skeeter, and launches into her Dating Wars against Ron in HBP. Considering how cruel this gets, especially against Ron, this is not always a good thing. However it does also mean that she would not sit passively by and let Ron/Harry/Malfoy/whoever abuse her.
