It really wasn't even a "feminist" work. Both Toph and Azula were planned to be males (hence why the first season shadowed earthbender and firebender were men) but after the HUGE female fan base appeared, the creators decided to change that and added and expanded a LOT of female roles. (Same thing with Suzi, she was supposed to be a one off character, it was fan devotion that got her back.)

It's also why Korra is a girl. They figured since they had a mostly female fanbase they might as well have a female hero. I think they're missing what fangirls really like (*cough* Zuko *cough*) but it's still going to be cool.

I have issues with Avatar (mostly with Aang, I never got into him as a character) but it was a very well written, intelligent, and thoughtful show that had a GREAT universe attached to it. They did a great job of making the universe feel real.

My biggest complaint in the end was how we were given a happy ending when I felt they had an entire seasons worth of issues to work out. (Mostly among Aang trying to obtain actual peace once the war is over and Zuko dealing with the overall hate felt for the fire nation.) But maybe the new series will address that.

It has flaws in my mind but is a great series nonetheless.
