I think that you may be right. I remember reading a Cracked.com article once (I think) where the author said that originally, the movie producers had planned to make Bella more proactive, but Meyer shut them down. Granted, it was something fairly unrealistic - I don't remember if they wanted to make Bella more like Buffy or a secret agent, I don't remember what it was, exactly - but the point is, they had initially wanted to make her more than the sullen, whiny twit that we ended up getting, thanks to Meyer. So, I think that her influence may be the problem.
