Probably they figured the teen harlequin romance would sell well in that medium.
It can translate well, depending on how it's done. In my opinion, Maximum Ride's graphic novel wasn't too bad. Thing is, they did a few cuts and actually showed instead of told and so on, which Meyer seems to not allow.
