ZeldaQueen: Well, no sense in dallying. Let's continue this stupid thing

Chapter 19: A New Heading

Jack’s Point of View

I once again found myself in Tortuga, sitting in the back of The Faithful Bride tavern.

ZeldaQueen: Oh I see what you did thar *rolls eyes*

My compass was not cooperating, and I would mutter, “I know what I want. I know what I want,” under my breath, shake the damn thing, and still get the same result.

ZeldaQueen: *raises eyebrows* My oh my, isn't this telling!

I can only guess that Ms Gethesemane was in serious denial over Jack's developing feelings for Elizabeth. Either that, or she's a total dumbass. Otherwise, she would have realized exactly why the compass wasn't working - Jack was conflicted over his desire to do what was right (help Will) or further his own selfish desires (get the heart).

Thus, we are left with the implication that Jack either is fine with abandoning Kate on the ship and is trying to force himself to solely be selfish and go for the heart, or he's trying to get the heart to save Kate and that somehow isn't the thing he wants most in the world.

Oh, and Gethesemane? When Elizabeth used to compass, her desire to save Will pointed it just fine. In other words, the canon couple, the two who you've been bashing right and left since page one, clearly have a stronger and more faithful relationship than you and your Twu Wuv

I glanced up at Gibbs, who was sitting at a table with a line of a few drunken men before him. I preferred drunken men over sober when it came to recruiting crew members: they didn’t ask questions.

ZeldaQueen: Thank you for holding my hand, Gethesemane. I shudder to think why it's so sweaty

“How’re we doing?” I asked.

Gibbs looked at me. “Counting those four? That gives…four.”

ZeldaQueen: (Gethesemanebot) "All humor has been successfully removed. Please have a nice day!"

I shifted my eyes, and returned to the Compass. It was still spinning madly.

I began to wonder if I would be able to gather the ninety-eight souls in order to save Kate. The whelp could take care of himself, but Kate trapped aboard the Flying Dutchman with all of those monsters…with Davy Jones to rule over them? I felt a shudder ripple through my body, along with a new resolve.

ZeldaQueen: That's very, very nice there. Apparently Kate's dearest snuggy-wuggy is perfectly willing to condem ninety-eight people to an eternity of Hell on a ship run by a ruthless demon of a captain. And he can't care less about Will, who he isn't even calling by his proper name.

And wasn't he going on about how tough and brave Kate was, and how she could care for herself? *snrk*

Another man had stepped up to the table, and Gibbs inquired, “What’s your story, sailor?”

I glanced up upon hearing a familiar British accent.

ZeldaQueen: Well dur it's familiar. Hasn't Sparrow spent the entire last movie sailing with Gibbs?

“My story? My story is the same as yours, just one chapter behind. I chased a man across the Seven Seas. The pursuit cost me my crew, my commission, and my life.”

A single thought ran through my head.

ZeldaQueen: (Sparrow) "At least this isn't a slash fic"

Bloody hell.

“Commodore?” asked Gibbs, staring at the disheveled man.

ZeldaQueen: Didn't she call him "disheveled" when Kate described him?

“No not anymore!” cried Norrington. “Weren’t you listening? I would have had you all of Tripoli if it weren’t for that hurricane.”

ZeldaQueen: Oh Norrington, I'm so sorry. Don't even bother trying to stick to canon, just escape while you have the chance

And people tell me that I’m daft.

I thought, glancing at the commodore. He had grown a beard during the months since his resignation; his clothing and hair were disheveled. He was a ghost of his former self.

ZeldaQueen: You know, I'm starting to think that Norrington's disheveled

Gibbs stared at him. “Lord! You didn’t try to sail through it!”

Norrington leaned forward. “So do I make your crew or not? You didn’t even say where you’re going.”

He then threw over the table. “Somewhere nice!”

ZeldaQueen: (Norrington) "Somewhere without question marks!"

I had tried to hide behind a palm leaf, though I stopped upon hearing the faint click of a pistol. Glancing up, I found that he had aimed the pistol at me.

ZeldaQueen: Norrington please, kill him. Save him from the fate of the Sue

“So am I worthy to serve under Captain Jack Sparrow? Or should I just kill you now?”

“Ah, you’re hired.”

He placed his finger on the trigger. “Sorry. Old habits and all that.”

ZeldaQueen: YesYesYes!

Two other men grabbed his arm, causing the gun to shoot upwards at a hanging chandelier. The bullet bounced, and shot another man’s bottle of rum. Chaos ensued, and the entire tavern broke into senseless brawls – even the tavern wenches were rolling about on the ground, pulling one another’s hair and screaming.

ZeldaQueen: Aw.

And yet again, humor is not allowed in this fic

I made my way up the stairs, trying on different hats. None of them seemed to fit as well as my own, and I just placed them on the heads of random pirates as they fought.

ZeldaQueen: HOW DO YOU TAKE SPARROW'S HAT-STEALING GAG AND MAKE IT SO UNFUNNY?

When Gibbs and I had at last made it out onto the pier, I heard someone yell my name.

“Captain Sparrow!”

I glanced back to find a young, thin boy following. “Come to join me crew, lad? Welcome aboard!”

ZeldaQueen: Oh, so Elizabeth finally shows up, eh? What happened to her smashing the bottle over Norrington's head? I guess she's not allowed to do anything remotely badass

“I’ve come to find the man I love.”

I stopped. “I’m flattered, but my first and only love is the sea.”

I glanced at Gibbs strangely, and he simply shrugged.

ZeldaQueen: (Sparrow) "I thought this wasn't a slash fic, in any case"

“I meant Will Turner.”

ZeldaQueen: Who?

I turned, and found that it was Miss Elizabeth Swann. “Elizabeth!”

I then whispered to Gibbs, “Hide the rum.”

ZeldaQueen: Ha ha, that's funny because it refers to a running gag that was never touched on in this fic

I found that Elizabeth was now standing next to me, and I grinned. “You know, these clothes do not flatter you at all. It should be a dress or nothing. I just happen to have no dress in my cabin.”

ZeldaQueen: Oh? Jack Sparrow is hitting on Elizabeth even though he's married to his Truest of True Loves?

I mean, I believe that he would continue to philander even if he did marry, but a later chapter has the Suethor wave it in our faces that Elizabeth sees how Jack never looks away from the Sue and how she's all jealous she can't get any of that

She rolled her eyes. “Jack, I know that Will came to find you. Where is he?”

ZeldaQueen: He was ignored in favor of the Sue. You'd better just find him and get the fuck out of this fic. You'll be the happier for it. Just look at how it worked out for Anthony and Johanna

I sighed, and looked at her. “Darling, I am truly unhappy to have to tell you this, but through an unfortunate and entirely unforeseeable series of circumstances that had nothing whatsoever to do with me, poor Will has been press-ganged into Davy Jones's crew.”

ZeldaQueen: You know, this just makes me even angrier. Jack is wangsting on about how poor Kate is stuck there, how it's so dangerous, how she'll never survive, and we're supposed to sympathize because she's his Darling Dearest, but when it's Elizabeth trying desperately to find Will, we're supposed to be perfectly fine with Jack lying to her and using her to his own ends

And yes, I know it's a canon line. In canon, we weren't supposed to sympathize with Jack or think he's the sweetest guy ever

“Oh, please,” groaned Norrington. “The captain of the Flying Dutchman?”

ZeldaQueen: Aparently Norrington has acquired the power of teleportation and just popped on in

He was obviously drunk, and was draped in dirt.

ZeldaQueen: Dirt Drapery - this year's hottest look for all you disgraced English officers

The gentle swaying of the dock did nothing to help matters.

ZeldaQueen: Help matters in what? His appearance? Was the ship rocking so fast he was a blurr or something?

“You look bloody awful, mate. What are you doing here?” I asked.

ZeldaQueen: (Sparrow) "Go home and sleep it off. There's no point in any characteres besides myself and Kate being around, anyway"

He looked at me as if I had asked a painfully obvious question. “You hired me. I can’t help it if your standards are lax.”

“Well, you smell funny.”

ZeldaQueen: This is so unfunny that I didn't pee myself laughing

“Jack!”

I turned to Elizabeth.

“I need to find Will,” she said.

ZeldaQueen: Good luck with that. The Sue's taken over all of his parts

A thought crossed my mind. “There is a way. You can find the chest to save Will.”

“Chest?”

“The chest that contains the still-beatin’ heart of Davy Jones,” said Pintel as he walked past us, flexing his hand in an imitation.

ZeldaQueen: And...where did he come from?

I glanced at Elizabeth.

“So I need to find the chest in order to save Will?” she asked.

ZeldaQueen: Good for her. I find it immensly cheering that someone still cares about that poor guy

I nodded, and handed her my Compass.

ZeldaQueen: Which apparently is now a proper noun

“This is no ordinary compass. It shows you the path to what you want most in this world.”

ZeldaQueen: The Suethor knows this and still kept in the subplot that he didn't know what he really wants? Even though he's supposed to want Kate more than anything in the world?

*laughs long and hard*

She opened it, and I hurriedly stepped back. She stared at its face for several moments, and I looked at it when it stopped spinning.

“Mr. Gibbs!” I said.

“Aye?”

“We have our heading.”

ZeldaQueen: Yep, it's obvious, Elizabeth's love for Will is stronger than Jack's for Kate. Gethesmane, canon just kicked your ass

(Author’s Note: I am going to say right here, right now that there is a love triangle among Jack, Kate, and Davy Jones. Of course, you people probably figured that out on your own….)

ZeldaQueen: What, Kate shoving her tongue down Jone's throat didn't make that abundantly clear to everyone already? And I guess the canon Will, Elizabeth, and Jack love triangle is going out of the window
