Exactly. And when it's done, it can come across as just weird. Take, for example, the version of Cinderella where Brandy plays Cindy there. The queen was played by Whoopie Goldberg, the king was a stuffy British fellow, and the prince was Latino. All anyone ever asked about it was "Okay, where did those genetics come from?"
Actually, that very issue was one of the reasons people once complained about Tiana being black. Before word spread that the movie was set in New Orleans, people thought it was in the usual vague European setting, but with the princess made black just because. The people who were bothered basically accused Disney of tokenism.
