As an MSTer myself, I don't believe I've ever seen an attack on the author unless they truly deserve it (example: Neil). And I know I'm not the nicest of MSTers- I don't ask permission for one thing. But bullying? I think that MSTing is only extremely elaborate constructive criticism.
For instance, way back when I was in middle school I read an awful script-format high school AU. Now I'm taking on said high school AU, but despite it being hypocritical, melodramatic, noncanonical, biased, and not using any actual Pokémon in a Pokémon story, I refuse to attack the author. Yeah, I know, small favors, but still.
But you know what? That one fanfic shaped a lot of my shipping opinions in that series for the next year (before I left shipping altogether) so in my tribute to its influence I decided to rip it apart. So to me, fixing and mending is what MSTing is about. It's not about slaughtering some poor, victimized author's fanfiction for an ego boost, it's about trying to make them, and myself, a better writer (or just letting out frustration), even if they will never see it.
