Whether or not you agree with nature vs nurture, the suethor *still* shot herself in the foot. In later chapters, the way Riddle describes his time at the orphanage, it's clear that we're supposed to think of it as just as abusive as the Dursleys treat Holly in this. So even if the suethor wants to say that it's nurture and not nature, it doesn't matter because in this HE STILL WASN'T GIVEN ANY NURTURE!
And I agree, one of the great things about Voldemort was how horrible he was. Tom Riddle was a fantastic villain because of how well he disguised himself. He himself didn't love or care for anyone, but was frighteningly good at pretending to, knowing just what needed to be done to get favors from people.
The suethor just took all of that and made him yet another groupie. And I have a terrible feeling that she's going to try to write Holly and Riddle hooking up. Gack! x(
