To be fair, while Rowling said the love potion-inspired rape had some effect on Riddle's personality, she did say that it was a lack of a loving upbringing that ultimately caused him to turn out the way he did. He wasn't evil from birth.
Still, I see your point. And Not Evil!Riddle seems like how Dark!Neo-Queen Serenity would go - it's possible to do it, but not by writing "He had a TRAGIC SAD BACKSTORY and also, magical shit! THAT ACCOUNTS FOR EVERYTHING! D8"
