I'm starting to wonder about that too. There are quite a few scenes like this. There's also a scene in the fourth book where Nora is bobbing for apples at a party and everyone's laughing and shouting in a way that just sounds like they're poking friendly fun, but she acts like they're all supposed to be mocking her. I honestly don't get why everything turns into people humiliating her.
