The reasons she gives for taking a job are that money is tight, she has to pay off the speeding ticket, she wants to buy a car, and work takes her mind off of Patch.
Those are all valid reasons, except that the lack of money only really comes up when convenient (besides Nora's occasional wangstings, I never get the sense she and her mom are scraping to get by), the speeding ticket is pretty much forgotten about, and the car...well, you'll see by the books end. As for Patch, she goes right back to obsessing over him in the next chapter, so there's no point to THAT.
In the book itself, the reasons are to try to show how Mature and Strong Nora is, as well as direct her to the next part of the plot.
I could buy the job being a good idea if she'd been written as the sort of person who dealt with stress by keeping busy. But her characterization fluxates so freaking much, she pretty much only does things to suit the plot!
