/partially because Fitzpatrick herself played it for laughs!/
Yeah, she wants to have it both ways. She wants to make cheap jokes about Vee herself, but when the character that the reader is supposed to hate does it, she condemns Marcie in order to appear as if she has the moral high ground.
/Vee response to Marcie’s announcement with “The term Slut Squad will take on a whole new meaning”./
And we’re supposed to like this person. We’re supposed to see her as funny and endearing. When, really, these types of comments are ones that Marcie, the VILLAIN, should be making, not our protagonists.
/Vee, being the wonderful friend that she is, shifts the entire bill on Nora./
WHY are they friends again? Vee is not only horrible to everyone, she’s horrible to Nora! Is this supposed to be funny? No, Ms. Fitzpatrick, it’s not. It just shows me what an irresponsible and selfish piece of garbage Vee is.
/Yet again, Nora is being taken advantage of just because she’s a dumbass who refuses to take the higher ground and just walk away!/
Well, if she just walked away, then Fitzpatrick would’ve had to come up with another way to get Nora into trouble with Marcie or get her back together with Patch. Once again, we have a contrivance for the sake of the plot.
/They’re a couple of stuck-up snobs who can’t be bothered with common people./
Remind you of anyone? *cough* Edward and Bella *cough*
/It’s not like he was leering at her or staring at her boobs or pretending to wank while looking at her! He was being nice and smiling! What is up with Vee?/
So, not only is she selfish, irresponsible, obnoxious, spiteful and obscene, Vee is a Debbie Downer with a jealous streak who refuses to allow her best friend to have any healthy relationships. Or Vee is a paranoid misanthrope who thinks that everyone outside of her tiny circle (Nora, Rixon) is out to get her.
/Vee tries to prod her into it with “It won’t feel wrong if you steal it so fast that the guilt doesn’t have time to soak in” and “Tell yourself this isn’t wrong enough times, and you’ll start to believe it”. Have I mentioned that I hate Vee?/
Actually…are we sure that VEE isn’t a fallen angel, too?
Think about it. She constantly gets Nora into trouble, constantly badgers Nora to do the wrong thing by guilt-tripping her and mocking her, pushes Nora to date Patch, who is obviously bad news, and tells Nora lies about how awful perfectly ordinary people are. If Nora had the archetypal devil and angel on her shoulders, Vee would definitely be the devil figure. If I didn’t know any better, I’d say that either Vee was secretly working with Patch to ruin Nora’s life or she got to Nora before Patch did.
/Vee wanted to totally ruin a girl’s life by publishing her entire sex life for the entire high school to see, and would almost certainly ruin her own life and the life of her best friend in the process! Hilarious!/
No, it’s stupid. It’s really, really stupid. You’re a brain-dead moron, Vee.
/Sometimes when he and his friends are bored, they drive over to watch the show. He said Marcie never rushes, and by the time she finishes, he has a cramp in his neck from staring up”/
*flatly* And of course, we’re supposed to think badly of MARCIE for this. We’re not supposed to think that the guy who drives by her house with his friends just to sit there and watch her undress are creepy stalkers or anything. We’re not supposed to feel badly for Marcie that she’s being ogled without her consent by pathetic losers who need to get a hobby. Oh, no. It’s all MARCIE’S fault.
What’s next, Ms. Fitzpatrick? Are you going to have Marcie raped or threatened with rape and then excuse her attackers by saying that if Marcie hadn’t worn her “promiscuous cheerleading outfit,” they wouldn’t have bothered? Because I know that a lot of religious fundamentalists would happily chime in with their own variations of your disgusting message.
