Of all the myriad faults in Meyer's writing (not even getting into her racist and misogynistic characterization), I think my biggest pet peeve is the incessant hand-holding. The characters act out, then stop, and either in monologue or in actual spoken dialogue, tell us exactly why they just did their action. Or monologue about why another character is acting a certain way (like Jacob with Leah in this chapter, as if we couldn't figure out why she was upset without him telling us).
This is the author a) not having enough confidence in her ability to relay characterization through actions and description and b) treating her readers like a bunch of freaking morons. "A" is annoying, but "B" is downright insulting. She constantly states how much she loves writing for tween girls. But apparently, she doesn't think much of their intelligence level.
Then again, given the rabid fans' love of this series... Maybe Meyer IS on to something.
