/There are a lot of idiot fans who twitter over how they LIKE how Patch doesn't pretend to be anything else but who he is./

Oh, yes, I know, the whole “Yeah, he’s a jerk, but at least he’s an *honest* jerk!” excuse. -_-

I’ve seen this argument used a lot as a defense for Jace Wayland. The fans argue, “Well, Jace *knows* that he’s a jerk. He doesn’t try to pretend to be something he’s not!” Okay. So, if he knows that he’s a jerk, why doesn’t he start trying to *not* be a jerk? Why doesn’t he try to grow up and improve himself, if he realizes that he’s messed-up?

It’s true that honest evil is more palatable than deceptive evil, but in the case of Patch and Jace, it’s not. At least the deceitful jerks are *aware* that kindness and politeness are considered appealing, which is exactly why they pretend to be kind and polite. But in the case of Jace and Patch, they don’t even try to be nice because their authors assume that girls will fall for them despite their terrible personalities or, even worse, *because* of their terrible personalities! They don’t try to be nice because they just take it for granted that girls will fall for them anyway.
