"Wait, why are vampires going after football players, it seems so random?"
Back in Marked, when Zoey tells Neferet about how Heath and Kayla visited her, she brought up the fact that both had smoked a joint before coming (no, there's no reason for this). Neferet, for no reason at all at the time, asks Zoey to write down the names and addresses of everyone she knew from her previous school that smoked marijuana and, after getting Neferet to promise she wasn't calling the police on them, Zoey did so. In that same scene, Zoey noted that most of the joint-smokers she knew were football players, seeing as she often met those people when she and Heath went to parties.
In other words, the vampires are going after football players because Zoey was a dumbass and gave their names in, and because the Cast ladies wanted a bizarre aesop on smoking marijuana.
