A good twist would be to make Nyx an Evil Goddess - and the whole thing a creepy cult. Yes - the group Zoey's step-father belongs to are evil, but so is Nyx - just in reverse. Zoey would slowly realize the truth (Nyx controls both cults! She has been manipulating people for centuries and is using their belief in her to power herself) and fight against them!
However in a twist it turns out Nyx was corrupted by her more evil followers beliefs and originally was a more benevolent goddess... Perhaps Zoey, Erik, Aphrodite, and Zoey's friends (who would all be much more likable) come together and purify Nyx - returning her to her true self.
