Did he give you anything else beyond "It would offend Harry"? Because if not, then yeah that's not a valid argument. Even if you ignore how out of character that would be, Hermione never even considers that in the fanfiction. It's just like Bella Swan never considering doing anything Edward wouldn't approve of.
