It's like the very creepy switch of many misogynistic stories in literature where the guy won't take the woman because she's 'damaged goods' because she's been in a sexual relationship or was raped in the past. It's even more disturbing because you don't even know how many reviewers didn't like Erik because he was a bland, one-note character.
