This is annoying, because I've heard how awful these books are, yet I kind of like the idea of a modern/contemporary world where supernatural/fantastic elements are known to exist and out in the open, just taken as a fact of life by the populace, as opposed to the "masquerade" trope so common in low fantasy settings. But these writers have already botched that in just the first chapter.
