I'm amused by how she keeps trying to justify Voldermont. How is she going to rewrite Goblet of fire then? (Warning, what follows is a huge rant)
As a side note, I hate the whole "Merope chose to die" business. I remember closing the book and hitting it against the table. I can understand Voldie coming to that conclusion as a child or forgive Harry, but Dumbledoore? I even shouted "You fucking dumbass" in Spanish and I rarely curse in Spanish.
Honestly, how did she choose to die? How? Let us evaluate Merope:
1) She's abused. 2) She's poor 3) She's ignorant. 4) We never see her use magic. She could have been a squib as her father suspected (I think he did, but if he didn't she could have been). (Potion doesn't count. We don't see her brewing it so for all we know she gathered all she had to buy some of them and stop giving it to Tom when she couldn't afford it anymore and he left her. Just because Dumbledoore gives a theory doesn't mean it's fact.)
The poor girl behaves like a mouse in the flashback. Just trying to survive and moving along. Her whole family lives like animals. Once her father and brother are gone she ends up with Tom. Then he leaves her (and I can totally see why) and she pregnant.
Let us see how she is now:
1) Alone 2) Malnourished. 3) No hospital giving her pre natal care 4) Desperate and ignorant (as seen when she sells, dressed in rags, the priceless locket for almost nothing) 5) I'm not sure, but I can't remember if she's homeless.
There's a reason Mary Shelly created Frankestein while pregnant. Giving birth is pretty scary. Sure, nowadays who dies from it? But before things like pre-natal care and hospitals it could really kill you. Especially when you live a life like Merope. Plus I have always imagined her as a petite young girl.
I come from a matriarcal family with lots of aunts and cousins and let me tell you when they are giving birth they are not making decisions so much as thinking "Ow, ow, get this baby out of me or at least give me some drugs" My godmother-aunt with her first child specially. (shudder) That was a painful one. Maybe there are calm births, but what are the chances of a woman of Merope's condition to have a calm one where she can think it through? Even more so because the birth causes her death. That had to be a big, painful one.
Finally, Dumbledoore himself stated, as we saw with Tonks, that people can loose their powers when they're depressed. I dunno about you, but if I were a pregnant, hungry, abused woman with nobody who cared about me... yeah, I would be pretty sad. So excuse her if she can't raise her skinny hand to raise her wand you jerk!
And another thing, if she was so pityful and didn't care about Tom to the point "she chose to die", why didn't she just offed herself before pushing the kid out? I mean, she just was so terrible a mother that jumping off a bridge would have been as efficient.
Seriously, as far as I can tell, she didn't "chose to die," she just died like many women before her have died. The fact she carried on pregnant and all and gave birth to him instead of blowing her brains out shows she cared. She tried to get money for food so she had plans to keep on living at least. And "She didn't had your mother's courage" was adding insult to a poor woman's memory and made me sick. He should have known better, since he's so wise.
