EBay can be habit-forming
In one of my earlier posts greeting the New Year, I mentioned buying a few items from eBay as a sort of holiday gift to myself. This was a grave mistake. Pretty much the only thing that has kept me from going to ridiculous lengths to buy figurines of characters I love, besides my own self-restraint and budget, is the ability to actually find them. EBay has seen to it that this last obstacle was soundly removed.
So it's pretty late and not much is going on. It's Saturday, I'm enjoying staying up late, and decided I'd see what all's for sale. I figured I'd look up some Donkey Kong stuff, since he and Mario seem to enjoy quite a lot of merchandise (as opposed to, say, The Legend of Zelda, for which finding figurines that don't come out of a capsule is like hunting for pirate treasure). I've just pulled up the site when I realize that Figma Link has joined me. I have no idea how he got to my laptop from the window sill he shares with Princess Sapphire and Sailor Moon, but there you have it.
Without saying a word, he kneels down by the laptop and just watches as I look through various things. He doesn't voice any opinions. He actually doesn't say much, really. I guess that's to be expected of Link, although he does talk. In fact, he displayed a very colorful vocabulary when he tried to ride Homicidal Epona (that's a story for another time). He's just a quiet guy, normally. He tends to wear his serious face a lot. Literally, actually, given that as a Figma he only has Serious Face and Furious Yelling Face.
I'm perusing action figures for Cranky Kong (awesome but a bit expensive) , Pauline (WANT so bad, but probably going to be bidding against someone else), Mario Kart 64!Bowser (I could MAYBE afford if I decided to forgo the actual kart), and Go-Karting Banjo (want, but definitely can't afford), when Link asks me, "Are you thinking of getting someone else?"
He's very quiet, and his voice takes me by surprise. "Uh, not right now, no. I'm just looking."
"Oh." He paused and made that "errr" sound people make when they want to say something but aren't sure how to word it.
"Yeah?"
"It's nothing."
I continue browsing. I just discover, to my delight, that there was stuff made for Diddy Kong Racing, when Link clears his throat again. "Are you... are you going to wake them up?" he asks.
It takes me a minute to realize what he's talking about. Then it hits me - the Ocarina of Time toys.
"You really should," he said, when he realizes I caught up with him. "They're just...lying there like that."
He's right. Zelda, Link (other one), and Ganondorf are all lying side-by-side on their box, still in their plastic bags, not moving a muscle. It's pretty creepy, now that Link's pointed it out. Still... "I don't know. Opening them up feels kind of like... I dunno, like leaving footprints on fresh snow or something."
"Yes," he said, "but you still do walk on fresh snow, don't you? And you especially would if you thought someone was in trouble, wouldn't you? It's the well-being of those three on the line, here."
I was about to point out that there wasn't exactly any indicator that those three were in danger, but then I saw him glance at at the Link and then the Zelda and then remembered what happened to the Zelda of his game.
Jeez. That would explain why seeing any Zelda in some sleep stasis freaks him out.
"Alright," I said. "I'll open them up, I promise."
"All of them?" he asked, as anxious as I'd ever heard him. "It wouldn't be fair..."
"Well sure, but are you that interested in all of them being woken up? I mean, one of those three is Ganondorf."
He gave me this puzzled look. "Who's Ganonodorf?"
Right, right, his game's canon.
My promise seemed to calm him down a bit though, so that was good. He decided he was ready for bed soon after, and I was pretty beat as well. Before I headed off for some sleep, I asked if he needed any help getting back up on the window sill. He said, if it was all the same to me, he'd rather camp out on the desk. That was fine by me, so he left his gear (the Goddess Sword and sheath, the Hylian Shield, and the gashapon bracelet item from A Link Between Worlds that I gave him) in a pile next to him, lay down on my mouse pad, and zonked out.
Before heading off to bed myself, I set him up with a rolled-up wad of paper as a pillow and an old receipt as a blanket.
