Well the best reason I could guess as to why Bella wouldn't want Edward to tutor Jacob is because she's being all secretive and stuff. But you're right, it was just another convenience for the plot that Edward could speak it. Meyer would just use the blanket "He studies all night out of boredom" thing, I guess.
