I tend to focus on romance and analyze it because a) I LOVE romance plots and b) trying to write romance plots so always seeing what feels right and wrong but to me, it feels pretty clear that Korra and Mako will get together. It's actually why Bolin/Korra got such a strong approval from me until recently because I REALLY like Mako and Asami, and I want Asami to be happy, but not I kinda am eh on both boys as romantic suitors. (Bolin seemed really selfish in the last episode with his "Oh you shouldn't get upset that your boyfriend kissed another girl and enver mentioned it because the most important thing is I'M over it" comment.)
BUT I do agree with you on how they downplay it. I really enjoy that about Korra in general, she makes stupid kid show character mistakes...then learns from them. Get arrested for tearing up the town? Next time goes to the police. Have strong evidence that a guy everyone likes could be bad? Tell your mentor so it gets the proper attention. She learns and thinks and refuses to back down but still gets scared and makes mistakes. I really like all that of her.
With that mangaka, she is best enjoyed with a giant grain of salt. I honestly couldn't finish that story because it go too violent and awful, while most of her other work skirted in the wrong side of unhealthy so it's enjoyable in that it-hits-kinks-and-I'm-not-taking-it-seriously way. Still, I 100% understand people who hate her because...yesh.
