I know about all that, but they did change them to women, and rolled with it, and had some great interactions come about because of it. They acknowledged it on the Season 3 DVD set, and since the end result was a bunch of strong women being awesome, that's good enough for me.

O.o I knew about Toph, but the firebender in the beginning is a dude? I seem to remember it clearly having Azula's little out-of-place hair strands, but maybe I need to watch again. Or was that originally supposed to be a guy, and Azula just ended up looking like him?

As with Harry Potter, I'm glad they didn't work out all the issues. That would have felt too neat and tidy. Of course the whole world didn't instantly get fixed when Ozai was dethroned, or Voldemort kicked it, just like the whole world didn't instantly fix itself when Hitler died. Having all the issues worked out would have been super unrealistic.

It had some flaws in my mind too, mostly with pacing and one-shot episodes that went nowhere, but overall, it's one of the best written serieses I've ever seen, second only to Arrested Development, maybe third to Firefly.
